7up Pakistan is on a noble mission. Having top chefs flown in from around the world to Pakistan, and giving the locals a chance to enjoy exotic cuisines, in the favourite restaurant, 7up Pakistan celebrated the true love of food.
The 7up Chef Bonanza, was a 25 day event, in which chefs and entertainers from across the globe visited Pakistan and served, performed for guests in 12 of the country’s top restaurants. A grand affair indeed.
I happened to be present at one of these soirees held at Monte Cristo, Karachi. The weather was still pleasantly in between Hell hot and Arctic cold (Karachites tend to exaggerate about how hot/cold it gets here). And Italian chef Giuliano Tassinari was busy working his magic in the kitchen.
While we waited for food, we were entertained by the very talented illusionist Rosen Roy, from Malaysia, who after very carefully filching a friend’s watch without him knowing, left us wondering if he ever went to work for the dark side. Yes, he returned it.
The stellar four course meal kicked off with an extremely refreshing 7Up mocktail and risotto rice. The delightfully creamy dish was light, a wonderful change from what we usually experience.
The second course, perhaps my favourite was the ravioli. Filled with fresh homemade ricotta and spinach, the simple flavours were surprisingly good, and got better with every bite.
For the third course, diners were given a choice of red snapper with prawn and shrimp sauce and beef tenderloin. I opted for the fish. It certainly did not disappoint.
The highlight however was the dessert. A rich combination of panna cotta baked with coffee and orange, and strawberry sauce, (did I give my favourite rating too soon?)
Along with the illusionist and chef, Ms Mercedes Hernandez Orta was flown in from the Habanas factory in Cuba to hand out freshly rolled out authentic Cuban cigars for the guests.
