My Ramadan MadeEasy with National Foods

Standard

So a good fortnight has passed since Ramadan began. And while I promised myself, this year, I would stay away from food that makes me happy, and stick to a diet, I failed (so far anyway).

Ever since Ramadan began, I found myself stuffing myself with all kinds of delicious food I could find. And while it is slightly difficult for me to list down everything I have had (Thank God) here are the top 5!

  1. Biryani

Ok, I can cook yes, but managing a biryani on my own …. not really no. This thing of beauty was prepared all the way by my mum and therefore was safe to consume. Her secret? The Biryani masala by National Foods.

2. Pita Bread Pizza

So the next thing on this list, I made myself, and yes, I survived. In the mood to have something delicious yet effortless, I searched online and came across this easy to make paratha pizza on madeeasy.com. Not being a fan of parathas, I swapped them for a Pita Bread, and lo and behold.

3. Watermelon and Peach Sorbet

So after the success of my Pita Bread Pizza, I wasn’t letting anything stop me from taking another bold step and this time with my own recipe attempt to make a sorbet! Yep, I dared. Using the Peach flavored Fruitily and fresh watermelon, I made this highly refreshing sorbet.

4. Lasagna

My love for Lasagna cannot be explained. It is perhaps the one thing I know I can make well. I have had other people eat it and say so too. My own recipe takes a lot of time and dedication on my part, and having none in Ramadan, I went for the easier version found on Madeeasy.com and made this. The picture isn’t too great, but trust me it was.

5. Peri Bites

My love for green chilies is very new. But since it has developed, I enjoy having the sharpness in my otherwise bland food. I am a fan of the peri bites and chili poppers many fast food cafes serve, and so when mum made these scrumptious things at home, I went insane. Yes, she surfs the internet too! Slice Slice Baby! Broadway Pizza – Review

Standard

If you want to know what true love feels like, order a pizza. Even if it’s not the best pizza in the world, the cheesy goodness will still give you a warm and fuzzy feeling.

db03be50badd278f48100841ac845787

True love!

For a city famous for hating everything happening within it, Karachi sure loves it food.  Every corner you turn you find four different pizza parlours, all offering ‘the largest’ or ‘the tastiest’ ‘the one for health conscious (yes!)’ and more. The streets are lined with massive billboards, tempting you with pictures of pizzas all stolen from the internet.

So what’s the deal with this cheesy piece of bread that makes us Karachiites so insane? To answer this question, I valiantly sacrificed myself as a test subject and volunteered to find the best pizzas in the city. Yes, only for you all, I will order and eat all the pizzas I can find in Karachi and give you the final verdict.

ce79272f61f37fd7c1d808cab8e6395b

Now I have already tried out the pizzas from various top outlets in Karachi and I have a few favourites. But in the spirit of having something different, I decided to order from the very famous (yet unexplored by me) Broadway Pizza.

The deals they were offering looked very enticing and being a sucker for some good pizza, convinced my mum to drop the idea of cooking something sad and ordered ‘The Full Deal’. The deal boasted a 20inch pizza of my choice, with an appetizer, a side, a 1.5 litre drink and 6 sauces.

Mentally prepared to gain 10 kg after this meal, I eagerly waited for my food to come. Promptly at 2pm, the time the guy on the phone told me it would arrive, the delivery guy showed up at my door. The pizza box was so huge, it wouldn’t fit in through the door, so I had to go find the key to open the extension (yep that was fun).  Three more trips in and out of the house with the food and I finally said goodbye to the delivery man (good guy.)

There are around 7 people in my house. And nobody was worried about not getting a piece (I don’t like to share). The box opened up to a very delightful looking heart shaped pizza! YES THE PIZZA LOVES ME TOO! My life is complete! Ok! So the love was short-lived because well I ate it. . February being considered the month of love (gag) I think this is the best a pizza parlour could do to keep up with the theme.

The pizza I ordered was Gypsy Euro, for appetizers, I got the Garlic Mayo Chicken wings, the side was Potato skins. Confused about the sauces, the guy taking my order said he would give me one of each. So I had 3 Garlic Mayo Ranch (everybody loved them), and 1 each of Jalapeno Ranch (a bit spicy), BBQ Ranch (liked the smokey flavour) and Spicy Buffalo (like the name said, too spicy).

The pizza was perfection. Thin crust just as I asked, it was crunchy and gooey at the same time. While I am a pepperoni pizza person, I had to keep in mind the others so Gypsy Euro with its topping of chicken sausages, smoked chicken and mushrooms among other things seemed the safest bet. And it delighted everyone. My dad who isn’t a fan of pizzas (yes, the horror!) too couldn’t resist. The huge slices meant nobody really had room for a second piece, even if they wanted to.  I don’t really like chicken wings, but my mum said she really liked them. The potato skins looked a little sad, but taste-wise they didn’t disappoint.

All in all, the little lunch I planned for the family went really well. Broadway Pizza has passed my test. Now looking for the next victim!

Much love,

Food Review: Habanero Mexican Grill

Standard

So I still think that the best thing to come from Mexico is Hector Salamanca, who tells you to go to hell with just a ding!  However the food isn’t all that bad either.  I recently got a chance to try out a new Mexican themed restaurant in Karachi, and while there was no Hector, everything, from the dĂ©cor to the items on the menu, gave off a vibe of Mexico.

hgtsL8W

I am a foodie at best, and my recent visits to numerous restaurants across the city have really awakened the critic in me. But again I haven’t had a taste of original Mexican food, so forgive me if my review doesn’t do it proper justice.

Located on Main Khayaban e Shahbaz, the quaint little place has funny little posters adorned on the walls: Exhibit A.

A closer look

A closer look

But the thing you notice first is this brightly colored mosaic on the front wall, which upon close inspection you realize is a shot from one of their platters. Yes, that is a boiled egg.

11909724_10156011401375541_1417795610_n

We were a group of four people, eager to expand our (mine in particular) desi palates and so ordered Chipotle Chicken fries and Chilli Poppers for starters, Shell and Soft Tacos, Burrito Bowl and Tex Mex Burger as mains.

The starters:

Chipotle Chicken fries were everything you would want a plate of fries to be. Crispy, cheesy and loaded with other crunchy bits like sweet corn, jalapenos, red beans (there are red beans in everything, score! I love them yes). They are listed as starters but can be a complete meal on their own, if you are hungry for some crunchy munchies. The Chilli Poppers were ok. Their filling needs a little work I guess.

11903358_10156011401360541_142792327_n 11917314_10156011401370541_92514475_n

The mains:

while I was already loaded with the fries, the mains were served. I tried a little of everything (such fun!) From the two kinds of Tacos, I preferred the Shell ones, though I wasn’t a fan of the after taste. The soft ones were juicy and well soft, and of course full of more beans! The Burrito Bowl was (as the name suggests) a bowl full of all the burrito ingredients sitting atop a bed of rice and topped with a generous serving of cream. It was a little difficult getting a bite of everything together, the rice just weren’t ready to be consumed by me, had to really dig for them, but taste wise everything was spot on. And now the burger. The desi in me had ordered it, and while everything else was fine, I wasn’t too happy with beans it in. I love beans, I might have told you before, but in my burger, no. That was the only thing I didn’t like about it. My tastebuds tried to be Mexican, they really did, unfortunately they are Pakistani down to the very last chromosome.

The drinks:

We ordered Bloody Orange, Ginger Mint Cooler, Blue Mist and Habanero Special. Out of all four, I loved Bloody Orange the most, and the best part was I ordered it, so while others got a sip, I finished it all off. I would go as far as saying that it is the perfect summer drink. Imagine lying on the beach (not chee-view, a cleaner one) and sipping a big glass of Bloody Orange. Nothing bloody about it though, except maybe the color (that’s good right) and came with a scoop of gelato.

11909739_10156011401335541_1514333053_n

The Desserts:

We ordered Chocolate Heaven Cake Slice, and Cheesecake. Couldn’t decide between strawberry and blueberry topping for cheesecake, so got both, genius right. The desserts were both absolutely delicious and we ate it up in a few quick bites.

11944876_10156011401350541_1746239722_n 11940649_10156011401345541_1088944885_n

Recommendations:

Definitely try the Chipotle Chicken Fries.

Go for the Shell Tacos.

Bloody Orange all the way!

And desserts have them all!

I now can’t wait to try their pizzas and nachos. Don’t know why I didn’t try those.

Shan Foods – Khushiyan Chakh Lo‬

Standard

As a child, I used to believe Shan Foods was hand made by the Pakistani actor Shan. I was a very innocent kid, (read dumb) (I even thought accidentally mixing bubble bath with washing powder would magically grow clothes onto your body… what?).

Shan Foods has been servicing Pakistan for over 3 decades and now has expanded its market to provide a taste of home to those living abroad. People who have been abroad, know the main issue with food is it being Halal. The only way you can be sure is if you cook it yourself. And God help you if you can’t cook. So with Shan Masalas now available across the globe, an amateur too can cook wonders. even if you find yourself living in a different country, alone. All you need to do is read the instructions written on the label, or maybe call a relative (skype anyone). This is perfectly expressed in their latest ad that is currently being aired. Even the most stoic hearts such as myself, quietly shed a tear or two watching as two brothers celebrate Eid away from their mother, but remembering her with one of her specialty dishes. Scroll down below to watch it if you haven’t.

A while back my uncle from India was visiting us. My mom’s Indian, and her entire family still lives there. He could not shut up about how good our food was. Insisted on taking boxes upon boxes of Shan Masalas, even though his luggage could hold no more.

There was a time when my mum went to India for two months. That period was one of the funniest ever since my dad was in charge of feeding his four clueless kids. His idea of cooking was putting in all the Shan masalas his hands could reach into a pot of boiling chicken, (yes like mixing biryani and kebab masala) and we were so horrified watching him cook, we ate silently. Thinking about it now, I don’t think anything he cooked tasted off. Maybe Shan Masalas are made for clueless cooks as well as professional ones.

If you are anything like me, you only cook if your life depended upon it (yay us). But in light of recent events, I went through a serious lifestyle change, that meant eating healthy. So I took it upon myself to make my own healthy food. While my family enjoyed biryanis and pulaos, I sucked up and ate my boiled cabbage soup. Sure it was sad but it wasn’t all terrible. On my proteins days, I got to enjoy a delicious grilled chicken, which I made with my secret recipe! (ok no, it was just marinated with some lemon juice and Shan Masala.) But it was something I looked forward to.

Gone are the days when aunties would gather, mixing different spices to prepare delicious dishes (sometimes I wish I was born in that era). However we too have our own spectacular feasts. Only ours is prepared much quicker thanks to Shan Masalas.

Ramzan deals Karachi 2015

Standard

So Ramzan in Pakistan starts from tomorrow. And once again all the eateries have out done themselves trying to get the fasters (and the pretend fasters) to try out their Iftar menus. Since my last blog about the Iftar deals was much appreciated, I decided to make a new one this year, just for you (if you happen to live in Karachi that is). This list will be updated all through Ramzan. If I have missed out on a place, help a sister (ha!) out and mention it in the comments and I’ll put it up. To make things interesting, lets keep a count. How many of the places mentioned on the list will you guys visit, or at least want to?

Fika/ Fika on the roof. The first Iftar deal that I came across was from Fika. Since I have been there and tried out the food, I must say I am really looking forward to their iftar menu. Also keeping up with the spirit of Ramzan, Fika will be donating Rs. 100/- from every bill to Edhi Foundation.

Verdict: Definitely try!

Lals Patisserie (update)

So I have always had a good experience at Lals. Their desserts are divine, and the quiche I had recently is something I have been craving a lot. For Ramzan, Lals is offering two special menus, one for their Shahbaz outlet and the other one in Dolmen. And to be very honest, the menus look very tempting! I am definitely going to Lals!

Review: So I stopped by Lals on Saturday for Iftaar. All you foodies looking for a break from the usual samosa pakoras should definitely check it out. The iftaar platter has a generous serving of freshly baked croissants, and pita bread, margherita pizza, fatayars, and, oh wait, read the menu given below. I love the chocolated covered dates ( I am not really a dates person, but had to try these). The flat bread pizza was crunchy and light, leaving plenty of room for the main course. I ordered the Lasagna, which was delish, making Lals my favorite place for it in Karachi. Friends ordered the Ramzan special Marrakesh Chicken and rice, which have been introduced to the menu especially for this month. According to them, the rice were a little low of the seasoning side, but the garlic yogurt gave it the necessary punch.

Verdict: definitely try!

Iftaar Menu Final (1)-01

Habanero

So this Mexican themed restaurant just opened up in Karachi and I have been looking forward to trying it out. You should too if you are curious what Ramzan in Mexico looks like. Here is their deal. Post 14 (1) Burger Lab

Burger Lab is the one place, where you there is no space to even set a foot. It is always boiling out with people. Their beef burgers are to die for! Here are their deals for Ifaar. Post 155 Post 156 Domino’s

I wasn’t always a fan of Domino’s. This one time I ordered a pizza from them and what I got was a monstrosity dripping with barbeque sauce. yikes!  I vowed never to have it again, until one poor day at work when I had no cash and was starving. Fishing through my purse I manage to collect 200 bucks and for that much the only thing available was a small domino’s pizza. I ordered the Italiano feast, which has now become my favorite, and since then I am a Domino’s convert. Have had it numerous times, and it hasn’t disappointed me yet. I was unable to find their facebook page, this I got from their Twitter. Order through their website and get 50% off! CH2C_oKUYAAbEpi Pizza hut

I don’t know the people who go to Pizza Hut anymore, but if you are one of them, here are their deals for you. Also why? I tried giving them another chance last month, and oh boy wanted to kick myself for that. I doubt if they would miraculously improve in Ramzan. Anyway, here are their deals

Verdict: In Ramzan, with no patience at all, I pass! 11053477_665882233512806_3856318614914218784_n

Mr Burger

Mr. Burger has always been love! Their juicy chicken deluxe burgers and classic Mr. burger with cheese are the reason I have weight issues. Recently however with numerous outlets closing down, their quality has seen a little dip. But with the opening of their new outlet at Rahat, I am hoping things are getting better again! This is their Ramzan deal!

Their iftaar deal gets you a free entree on every order. 11225734_865460340200608_6916184520265102026_n Johnny Rockets

While the food is alright, the shakes at Johnny Rockets are yum! And with the new branch opening next to Naheed, very near my workplace, I just might stop by for one. Their iftaar deal offers you a buy 1 get 1 free meal. So take a date along. you know Kajoor!

Review: Johnny Rockets yesterday with a friend. It was awesome. From service to food quality and value for money, everything was spot on.We got complimentary drinks which was a polite gesture from the staff. Our order was:

Cosmopolitan

Had food at Cosmopolitan twice. The first time I stopped by for the newly launched breakfast menu, that was average. I am a sucker for French Toast, but the one I had there left me disappointed. Their Fererro Rocher Pancakes however. were absolutely divine. But given that they had newly set up by then, I forgave them and had food again, and second time I had a great experience. So if you are wondering whether you should stop by Cosmopolitan for Iftar, I say you should!

I am not sure about the drumsticks though, and this is precisely what they are offering for Ramzan, a bucket full of chicken legs. I am not a chicken leg person, so skipping out on this. 11428505_10153432986100561_8941430139978447965_n Bella Vita

Chairman Mao (new)

My most recent visit to Chairman Mao was very …. saucy, because everything we ordered was dripping with ketchup. There was a time when Mash n Bangers was open for delivery at my workplace with charging a ridiculous amount of delivery fee. And we ordered Mash n Bangers (the name of a dish) quite a lot. I haven’t tried in in quite a while, so you will be trying this Ramzan deal at your own risk.

If you haven’t heard of this place before. let me clarify that this isn’t the minty chocolate heaven you thought of. It is a restaurant in Bahadurabad. So I don’t understand why you guys would want to go out and eat samosa pakoras again, and pay for it too. I mean don;t you eat the same stuff at home? I prefer the homemade ones anyway! So Hob Nob has made quite a name for themselves with their cakes and brownies. Also every time there is a birthday at work, we hop off to the nearest Hob Nob to get a cake. Anything else is considered an insult. Since I haven’t tried out their savories I can’t tell you if this deal is worth your time and money. But again, why would you go out to have samosa pakoras?

I really don’t know who’s managing Vintage’s Facebook page, but they need to tone the cheese down a tad bit. That said, I really want to stop by and try this out! 11424782_1592490257672400_2537831081186640473_o BBQ Tonight

So every time my family decides to go to Rajdhani, something goes wrong. One time a relative broke their arm, on another occasion it was closed because a new management was taking over. and recently our car broke down on the way forcing us to settle for a kebab paratha place near by. I have had the good fortune of visiting Koel Café twice and on both occasions, I was pretty happy with my food. The one time I stopped by Capsicum, I promised myself no more. The only good thing about this place is the decor, oh and their overly friendly staff who is ever so apologetic about food coming late, which was something I saw happening to everyone around my table. Go if you absolutely must.

Verdict: Skip it.

So with a pizza wala opening up shop at every gali and mohalla ka nukaar, the competition is getting tough. Not to be left behind, the nukkar ka pizza shops also have introduced their Ramzan Special deals. Haven’t tried Pizza Max, before, though I am sure it would be better than Pizza hut.

Another place I haven’t been to. Also they have an extra z in their name, so that made me judge them a teensy bit. But who cares about grammar if the food is good. There was a time, when only a handful of places had the home delivery option. And Kaybees was one of them. That was also the time when their food was actually good. Their club sandwich for instance had real chunks of chicken and was something I occasionally craved for. Now, well a few bits do poke out from the mayo laden pieces of bread, as for the fried chicken, it is as tasteless as it is pink. Lal Qila (new)

There was a time when the food at Lal Qila was actually good. The crowd at the Jumbo prawns section meant you had to sneak a piece or two from mum’s plate because no way could you get some on your own. The barbeque too was good and the white chicken handi absolutely yum. Fast forward last month, we went there again for my dad’s birthday. Awful. No line at the prawns. white chicken reeked. and barbeque was average. I don’t think I am planning to return there anytime soon.

Iftaar review: Went to Lal Qila with 6 Fiends on Tuesday and had worst experience, their service has got pathetic
and the food served was cold. They have minus few signature dishes.

Verdict – Skip it.

Dolmen Mall

If you are a shop till you drop kinda person, you must be spending a great deal of your time at Dolmen Mall. And when the call to prayer is heard, you decide why not go up to the food court and have some. I have a list of places offering Ramzan special deals at Dolmen. However be warned; since I have survived an iftaar at Dolmen, here is what you need to know. Find a seat an hour and a half before Magreb! Trust me on this. The food outlets charge a crazy amount of money for a small bottle of water (since the shaitan in them knows it’s what you need after a long fast), So make sure the deal you buy includes a water bottle.

Cinnabon

Who here hasn’t craved for a cinnamon bun and a red velvet cupcake from time to time (really you haven’t?) If you are in Dolmen, check this deal out. 10500424_1145297762150952_1774505553604625137_n Bombay Chowpatty

While in normal days, my mum loves their dossa, I don’t know if they maintain their quality during Ramzan. Also this deal fails to impress me. I mean why? Anyway, a few people have been kind enough to share details of some of these food places with me, so I’ll do the same for you all! However since the deals posted below aren’t being taken from their official page, I cannot guarantee their authenticity.

The Lantern

First, they have a page, but it hasn’t been updated in forever? Why people? Need social media? Contact me! Their Ramzan deal includes an Iftar Deal for Rs 699 + tax and Sehri 35 % off on anything you order from 11 pm till 2am.

Rangoli, Arena – Iftar tried and tested

Up until the last time I visited Rangoli, they served pretty decent food. I don’t know how it is now. Their iftaar deal starts from Rs. 1099/-

Update: A review from someone who tried Rangoli. Maybe It’s better to skip it this year? Karim Ali: I tried Rangoli for Iftar on Saturday. We were 4 friends and had the worst experience. AC was not working properly, food was tasteless, malai boti and kabab were not properly cooked and it costed us Rs.7500 for 4 people. To add to it, just when the iftar started, the staff gave us the bill and insisted we pay as early as possible. That was very embarrassing for everyone I believe. The only good thing was getting a bowling coupon at the end of the deal.Never ever going to Rangoli again!’

Verdict – Skip it.

Roasters

Almost everybody has at least once stopped by Roasters for iftaar. About time they got active on social media, not that they would ever change their soundtrack to something from this century, sigh. Their Iftar deal is for Rs. 1340/-.

Charcoal

If you have the strength to drive out that far, Charcoal has an exciting Iftaar offer for you starting from Rs. 1,195 + tax.

Kolachi

This I got from their page. please make sense out of this if you can. Also do try their Makhani handi and pulao. Iftar+buffet ‘dinner @ Kolachi ( spirit of Karachi) Adults = PKR-1490 plus tax ,Childrens (4-8yrs)=PKR-890 plus tax’

My 13 day diet – Final Chapter

Standard

Oh my God! It’s over! The torture is finally over. I wanted to blog on the last day as well, but WordPress got banned for  day in my country. Fun. Anyway, Sunday was the 13th day of my diet and I successfully managed to pull through. Woke up Monday to a big breakfast of Halwa Puri (I don’t know how to translate that). Then yes, had a box full of chocolate chip cookies … and my evening I was all ready to throw up (and I did).

Today however, even the thought of food is making me slightly nauseous, especially things with sugar. I was looking for pictures of chocolate for work (yes, I work) and all the time I spent looking at those gooey melty chocolate images, all I could think of was Good God the sugar will kill me.

OMG, It's so rich I'm going to dieeeee!

OMG, It’s so rich I’m going to dieeeee!

So I guess that is one good thing about the diet. Not only has the diet killed off my cravings (after a box full of cookies) it makes me look at all oily, full of calories, food in absolute terror.

The main concern I now have is to keep off all the weight I lost, and yes I lost weight. Not as much as I wanted to but still enough to make me giddy and fit into my old jeans!

So this chapter of my life is done with! I will be back with reviews of food and restaurants soon enough, and hopefully will keep trying to lose weight and share the stories with you all!

Thanks for all the love and support! Love you all!!

My 13 day diet – Entry 8

Standard

11:30 am: The countdown has begun (well I was counting down from the day I started). So I have completed 11 days of this torturous diet, cheating not even once, even though temptations came from every corner. And frankly now this thing needs to be over. I am tired of letting all that delicious food down. Food that looks at me with those gorgeous colors and asks me to give it a warm comforting home in my tummy. 2 days might as well be 20! But anyway, breakfast is done. Lunch is a few hours away (cottage cheese and carrots) and the dinner and then day 11 will be over too! Till then..

If Only

If Only

4:30 pm: Lunch was good. As before I grilled the cubes of cottage cheese and steamed a carrot. The bread I have from breakfast, multigrain bread with bits of herbs is the only meal I have actually looked forward to on this diet. So far I have lost around 4000 grams. Yes, you guys can convert kgs to pounds, I will convert them to grams. That helps my case and sounds pretty impressive too. I fear my state when this diet will be over. I have already made a mental note of all the things I will eat after the diet, I just hope I don’t gain back all those 4000 grams. That is going to be worse than 4kgs!! Lord help me.

45b7d21803e5f246c87d620b191411ae

Dinner tonight will be a bowl of fruits (one apple) and yogurt. Yay me!
